1508 – Luther’s superior, an aristocrat-turned-monk named Johannes von Staupitz, sends Luther to serve as a substitute professor at the university in Wittenberg. Staupitz is closely connected to Frederick the Wise, Elector of Saxony. Frederick himself had recently founded the University of Wittenberg (1502) against his bishop’s objections (as it was not an ecclesial school).
