Staupitz and Luther enjoy a close relationship, and Staupitz becomes Luther’s confessor. Luther would stringently examine himself and confess every single thing he could think of. Luther worried that he was not contrite enough to truly confess; indeed, Luther worried that his contrition verged on selfishness, and thus in trying to seek forgiveness was continuing to damage his relationship with God.
