November, 1510/1 – Staupitz sends Luther to Rome. While in Rome, Luther visited the Parthenon, the catacombs, and the Santa Scala at the Lateran Palace. While celebrating Mass, Luther was distressed that the local priests rushed him through the liturgy; one report suggests a Roman priest scoffed at the consecration, “Bread thou art, and bread thou shalt remain.”
