To repay this debt, Albrecht supports the preaching activity of Dominican friar Johannes Tetzel. Tetzel was also an inquisitor, meaning he was in a position to go after rivals who challenged him. Frederick, concerned with the potential loss of income that would result if pilgrims to the Wittenberg relics were to buy indulgences from Tetzel, banned the Dominican preacher from Saxony. Luther and his fellow critics assumed that the pope was unaware of Tetzel’s actions.
